Tomorrow is going to be epic.
I imagine most of you are familiar with the expression: bucket list. One of the items on mine has always been to fly fish Mossy Creek, Virginia. Mossy is arguably the most famous trout stream in Virginia and is known for its very large and hard to catch brown trout.
My friend and client Matt and I are going to fish it tomorrow with our guide Nick from Mossy Creek Fly Fishing in Harrisonburg, VA. Why share this?
It wasn’t that long ago that I had been worn down from years of struggling to manage caring for a severely handicapped son and somehow keep my coaching business going. In many ways, I was just surviving and/or slowly wasting away. I was out of shape, depressed and wondering if suffering and hardship was the path forward.
I wasn’t going to quit, but I was also really tired and not really living.
I had given up most of the things that made me the most happy as a result of time and/or fatigue. Fly fishing was one of those things. In essence, I gave up something that made me more alive to try and stay alive and the bargain didn’t work.
Many of you might be in a similar position, if not exactly the same context. Often, the professionals I interact with are simultaneously financially and professional successful and quietly unhappy. This is because we often get distracted by the things we have to do and slowly miss out on what we really want to do.
If you are doing well at work and yet don’t have time to go live…I want to encourage you to start changing that. Why become successful to have a life that is filled with things and yet feel like you missed out on what was really important.
My wife was laughing at me, in love, last night as I geeked out over the trip tomorrow. She remarked that she loved to see me this excited and reminded me to make sure I got some sleep.
You can have success and a life that is full of joy. You do need to do some work to make that happen and to keep your life aligned (throw out that trash talk of work life balance…complete and utter nonsense).
What makes you most alive?
What really matters to you?
Why aren’t you doing that as much as possible?
This is 100% relevant to getting predictable referrals, btw. This is because when you are most alive…you are most referrable. People want to introduce people that are enjoying their lives, especially financial advisors, to other people. Your BMW or Porsche isn’t going to make them want to refer you, but your passion for life will do nicely. #financialadvisors #coaching #flyfishing #personaldevelopment #wealthmanagement
Get out there and live. If you are stuck and not sure where to start, reach out and let’s talk.
All the best,
Mike
