There’s a line you hear on social media and in every marketing meeting eventually: referrals don’t scale.
It’s said with confidence. Usually by someone selling something: paid ads, a funnel, a content engine, a marketing program, or a pipeline tool with a dashboard
I want to make a quiet and direct observation.
The most successful growth campaign in the history of human civilization, for thousands of years, was built on referrals. No ad spends. No platforms. No funnels. No CRM. The technology stack was feet, ships, and letters.
That campaign was Christianity.
Within decades of a public execution in a backwater province, communities of believers were operating in Jerusalem, Antioch, Corinth, Ephesus, Rome, and dozens of cities between. Within three centuries, it was the dominant religion of the Roman Empire.
The growth engine, for nearly all that period, was a person telling another person about Jesus Christ… what they had seen, heard, or experienced — and that second person believing them enough to tell a third…in many cases while under threat of torture and/or execution. In fact, Christians are still being persecuted in large numbers today around the world.
That is the definition of a referral.
This campaign also happened to run on the worst distribution channel ever invented: actual human beings, with all their inconsistency, their social risk, their bandwidth limits. No reach optimization. No algorithm. Just trust, transferred one conversation at a time, often at significant personal cost to the messenger.
This is why when a Christian business owner tells me referrals don’t scale, I have a problem:
Either the foundational claim of our faith — that ordinary people loving and following Jesus, telling the truth about what they experienced, can change the world — is true, or it isn’t.
You can’t profess it on Sunday and dismiss it on Monday because someone showed you a slide on paid acquisition CAC. That is because for referrals to really scale…you need to give as well, and that is something your Google AdWords or direct messaging/cold email campaign is never going to do…it will never require you to be more than you are right now.
